It was rediscovered by the Letraset company in the 1960s for their dry-transfer sheets, then popularized further in the 1980s when Aldus bundled it as the default filler text in PageMaker, one of the first desktop publishing tools.
The reason it works as filler is that it looks like real prose — natural word lengths, sentence rhythm, letter frequency — without being readable, so a reviewer's eye lands on layout and typography instead of getting pulled into the copy. That same idea has since spawned parody variants like Bacon Ipsum and Hipster Ipsum, which swap in different vocabulary but serve the same purpose.
